“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit.”

 Psalm 34:18

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

As news continues to unfold about the reopening of a criminal investigation into allegations of sexual assault involving former Cornell University students, many in our Upper New York community are carrying grief, concern, confusion, and a deep longing for justice.

We hold in prayer all survivors of sexual violence, especially those whose wounds may be reopened by renewed public attention. We pray particularly for the person who has come forward—that she may be surrounded by compassion, support, and care, and know that her life and dignity matter deeply.

We also pray for all who are entrusted with seeking the truth. May investigators, prosecutors, attorneys, university leaders, and others involved be guided by wisdom, integrity, fairness, and a commitment to justice.

As United Methodists, we affirm that every person is created in the image of God and has sacred worth. Our faith calls us to reject all forms of exploitation and abuse and to help build communities where every person is safe, respected, and valued.

The prophet Micah reminds us of what God requires: “to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). In this moment, we pray for truth, accountability, healing, and justice.

Support is available to victims via the New York State Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Hotline: calling 1-800-942-6906, texting 844-997-2121, or using the live chat available 24/7 through the New York Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence.

We pray for those who are hurting, and we recommit ourselves to nurturing communities where all people can live without fear.

In Christ,

Bishop Héctor A. Burgos-Núñez The United Methodist Church Serving the Susquehanna and Upper New York Episcopal Area
