From Bishop Burgos: A Note of Gratitude for Our Pastors

Editor's Note: The following message was sent to United Methodists of Upper New York on behalf of Bishop Héctor A. Burgos-Núñez on Sunday, October 18, 2026 giving thanks for pastoral leaders in the Susquehanna-Upper New York Episcopal Area.

Dear family of God,
Grace and peace to you in the name and love of Jesus Christ.
I give thanks to God for the countless ways pastors across Susquehanna and Upper New York serve with faithfulness, compassion, and courage. Day after day, they proclaim the gospel, care for God’s people, and lead our congregations with steady hearts and bold love. Their ministry makes a lasting difference in the lives of individuals, families, and communities.
As we observe Pastor Appreciation Month, I encourage congregations to explore meaningful ways of thanking and recognizing our clergy—not only in October, but throughout the year. You’ll find helpful ideas and resources here: Pastor Appreciation Sunday: Ways to say “thank you” | UMC.org.
This season also invites us to reaffirm a shared commitment across the Episcopal Area: rebuilding a culture of Sabbath. Honoring pastors’ time away from ministry is an act of care, covenant, and discipleship. Every pastor is entitled to two days off each week and to their earned vacation time. One of the most impactful ways congregations can show appreciation is by supporting their pastor in taking that time—stepping forward to share in the work of ministry and ensuring that the life of the church continues through the gifts and leadership of its laity. This shared ministry is deeply rooted in our Methodist heritage.
Jesus reminds us, “Come to me, all you who are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest… and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28–29). Rest is not a luxury; it is a spiritual practice that sustains pastoral well‑being and strengthens the vitality of our shared mission.
May each pastoral leader know they are valued not only for what they do, but for who they are—for the ways they love boldly, serve faithfully, and lead courageously. And may our gratitude be expressed not only through words, but through creating space for rest, renewal, and flourishing ministry in every congregation.
I pray that all who serve in our churches will find time and room to renew their spirit and experience God’s sustaining grace.
Together in the journey,
Bishop Héctor A. Burgos-Núñez
