It equips clergy, church leaders, and faith communities with training and resources for suicide prevention, crisis response, and compassionate care for those affected by suicide loss. As people navigate mental health challenges, grief, and crisis, faith leaders are often called upon to offer care, guidance, and support. Yet research shows that while many churchgoers expect churches to address these issues, many clergy do not feel adequately equipped to respond. To help address this need, the E. Stanley Jones Foundation, the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM), and Global Ministries developed this resource to equip clergy and church leaders with practical tools, faith-based perspectives, and guidance for recognizing warning signs, responding with compassion, and connecting individuals with appropriate support and care. The training course is organized into chapters, making it easy to navigate specific topics and revisit key sections as needed. Ten months of monthly cohort gatherings (half through Zoom, half in person), one significant opening renewal trip, one significant closing storytelling immersion trip, and curated congregational resources. What is the initiative’s primary goal? To help preachers have a healthy rhythm of rest, work, and play in their day-to-day life so that they can be more inspirational preachers. How many preachers can participate in cohorts? We anticipate hosting five cohorts of approximately 12 preachers each beginning in 2025 through 2027. This totals about 60-75 preachers in cohorts. We will also anticipate having one-day immersive regional events and curated resources that will reach more pastor-preachers. What is the criteria to apply for a cohort? To apply to participate in a cohort you must be a clergy or lay person who currently preaches at least twice a month at an Upper New York United Methodist church or ministry. Is there a cost to participate in a cohort? We anticipate asking churches to make a financial investment of the following for participating preachers. Less than 25 persons Average Worship Attendance (AWA) total in appointment $400. Less than 60 AWA total in appointment $500. Less than 100 AWA total in appointment $550. 100+ AWA total in appointment $650 Optional: Investments of up to $1,500 will be used to support other clergy in their participation This investment supports ten months of monthly cohort gatherings (half in person, half on Zoom), one significant renewal trip, one significant storytelling immersion trip, and curated congregational resources, which total a $10,000 investment from the Lilly Grant for each cohort participant. United Methodists respond through UMCOR, Volunteers in Mission, and disaster teams, offering both practical aid and compassionate care as communities rebuild. In partnership with VOAD, UMCOR, and other organizations, teams respond to disasters both within the conference and across the country. In 2025, the Upper New York Disaster Response team trained 22 new Early Response Team (ERT) members and contributed more than 2,000 volunteer hours. Teams served communities including the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation, Newark Valley, Canastota, Rome, and Rochester, and also deployed to Georgia and Wisconsin to assist other conferences.
