A Letter from DS Rev. Mike Weeden
Greetings in the name of the One who brings light into our darkness!
I write to call your attention to the special link on the Upper New York Annual Conference website related to the Special Session of General Conference coming in February: http://www.unyumc.org/events/special-session-resources#Other%20Videos. It can also be found by going to the Upper New York annual Conference Webpage, clicking on Events tab at the top, and there you will see the Special Session link.
You will find this link to contain a host of helpful information, both video and printable, that are downloadable so you can peruse them yourself, share them with your congregations, and provide presentations. This link contains:
- video representations of the summary of the plans Bishop Webb shared in the 6 regional gathers this Fall. These presentations include questions for conversation.
- the powerpoint presentation Bishop Webb used in the regional gatherings.
- a very helpful summary of the three plans.
- downloadable videos about the Special Conference and a unique parable on conflict given by Gil Rendle.
- a very helpful FAQ downloadable document that contains the various questions asked during the 6 regional gatherings.
This location on the Annual Conference website will be updated over the next two months so please return to it again and again.
I hope you will take time to look over this link and use these resources to continue to educate yourself, to continue educating your congregation, and foster conversation. I also ask you to promote the Praying Our Way Forward link to invite people to continue in prayer for the Special Session of General Conference.
I also ask for you to encourage(if you have not done so) your congregation to set their watches, phones, etc. to alert them to enter into a short season of prayer at 2:23 every day until February 23rd, 2019(the day the Special Session begins). My phone alerts me at 2:23 pm every day.
These resources are timely and helpful. Please look over them and share them with your congregation. And, let’s remember that as significant as February 23rd to 26 are, February 27th is just as or is more important. That is the day after the Special Session. Whatever the outcome of the Special Session, our mission remains, To Make Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World”. Special Session will not change the urgency of this mission.
As we walk together through this season of Advent and anticipate the celebration of the birth of the Savior, the words of Ann Voskamp keep speaking to me. She writes in her devotional, The Greatest Gift, Unwrapping the Full Love Story of Christmas, “the answer to deep anxiety is the deep adoration of God.”
That’ll preach in this season and any season to come!
May the Spirit of the Christ child blow through your services, homes and hearts. As you join all the others at the manger to adore the Christ Child, may the Peace of Christ fill your lives and touch the lives of others!
