Each year the Upper New York Annual Conference College Scholarships Committee offers Lottie Brown Scholarships for undergraduate students who are intending to enter a career in Christian service. This year’s recipients are Emily Allen, Katie Allen, Melissa Chun, Kendra Ellison, Rachel John, Lela Ormsby, and Sam Smith.

Emily Allen attends Houghton College; she will be graduating in Dec. 2019. She hopes to become a United Methodist elder and has already begun the process with the District Committee on Ministry to become a certified candidate. Emily said, “I know I have been blessed to attend Houghton and that my ministry will be greatly impacted by my experiences here, not only through the skills and concepts I have gained understanding of, but also, because of what living with other Christians has taught me.”

Emily’s younger sister Katie also attends Houghton College. Katie is passionate about learning new topics, especially those related to faith. She intends on pursuing a career either as a pastor or a professor of theology, philosophy, and/or psychology.

Melissa Chun will be studying at Princeton University. She intends to pursue a career in poverty law or politics to lift those in need and serve others in society in the name of God.

Kendra Ellison will be attending St. John Fisher College. She will be pursing a degree in nursing and has chosen this profession because of her passion for helping people, which she feels is central to being Christian.

Rachel John will be attending Sacred Heart University where she will major in nursing and minor in global studies. She has been on mission trips in Nicaragua and Cuba, both of which inspired her to pursue her studies at college. She hopes to use this education to continue mission work of helping those who need medical care in impoverished communities.

Lela Ormsby will be attending Clarkson University this fall where she will pursue a degree in Civil Engineering. She chose Clarkson because of their Engineers without Borders program. She believes that this degree will help her to share God’s love with others throughout the world.

Sam Smith will be attending SUNY Potsdam and pursuing a degree in History. He feels called to become United Methodist clergy as a profession. Sam has chosen History as a major because he feels “to study history is to begin to understand people, and without understanding people, no ministry can be effective.”

It is scholarships like the Lottie Brown scholarships that enable our young people to fulfill the path God is calling them to take. We ask that you keep each of these scholarship recipients in your prayers as they begin their steps to careers where they will continue to serve God.
