Earlier this week, Bishop Héctor A. Burgos Núñez announced the formation of the Upper New York (UNY) LGBTQ+ Inclusion Team—an initiative established by the 2025 Annual Conference session and shaped in response to recent revisions to the Book of Discipline adopted by the 2020/2024 General Conference.
A Spirit-Led Team of Trusted Leaders
The Inclusion Team comprises a diverse group of leaders known for their spiritual depth, trusted guidance, and unwavering dedication to justice and inclusion:
• Rev. Dr. Michelle Bogue-Trost – Convener
• Superintendent Richelle Goff
• Rev. Dr. Heather Williams
• Pastor Aaron Carlson
• Michele Cole
• Diana Breedlove-Crouch
• Sam Mudge
Together, these individuals will lead the development, curation, and distribution of resources to support congregations seeking to become more inclusive of LGBTQ+ individuals. Their work will be unfolding at a sustainable pace in consultation with the Bishop.
Rooted in Grace and Inclusion
At the heart of the team’s mission is the conviction that every person is a beloved child of God. “By equipping willing and ready churches with tools for inclusive ministry, the UNY LGBTQ+ Inclusion Team seeks to nurture communities where all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, can experience the fullness of God’s love and grace”, said Rev. Bogue-Trost, team convener.
The team will convene for its inaugural meeting in November. As they begin this sacred journey, Bishop Burgos-Núñez invites the Conference to hold these leaders in prayer, asking for wisdom, courage, and compassion to guide their work.
A United Methodist Witness
United Methodists of Upper New York continue to move forward as a diverse Christian community that welcomes people from all walks of life. Our faith and hope are anchored in Jesus Christ. Led by the Holy Spirit, our journey of faith and mission is grounded in Scripture and guided by our doctrine, polity, and social principles. We celebrate our rich diversity as a gift from God. While we may not always agree on every issue, we remain joyfully united in our love for Christ and our shared mission: to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
