The Upper New York Conference is excited to announce that Shelby Winchell has been promoted as the new Director of Communications for the Upper New York Conference. She is replacing Steve Hustedt, who vacated the role in the fall of 2022 to become the top communicator for the College of Science at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Shelby is a familiar face around Upper New York. She joined the Conference Communications Team as the Social Media and Website Specialist in 2017. She also played a significant role behind the scenes for both in-person and virtual Annual Conference sessions.

Shelby is a former television news reporter and also has a background in higher education and running a not-for-profit community center. She is excited to transition into this new role.

“I am honored to be able to continue telling the stories of Upper New York and taking our communication to a whole new level. I have met some amazing individuals and seen God’s work through our churches and ministries. I am blessed with this opportunity and am excited for what’s ahead.”

The Rev. Bill Gottschalk-Fielding, Assistant to the Bishop and Director of Connectional Ministries said, “Shelby is a gifted communicator and a respected leader. She’s already made significant contributions to our communications ministry. I’m grateful she’s willing and able to step into the Director’s role and look forward to where she’ll lead this ministry in the days ahead.”

Shelby is married with two children. Her husband, Mike, is a high school teacher and a published author.
