On Sunday, August 21, seven United Methodist churches from the Oneonta District gathered at the YMCA for a time of fun and fellowship, and to assemble UMCOR school kits. They put together 106 kits with a couple of boxes of left-over items that will be donated to local schools. Their goal had been 100 kits.
Each of the churches spent the summer collecting the items and sewing the bags. A couple of women sewed more than 15 bags each. Each church collected at least 100 of a specific item for the kits.
Participating churches from the Oneonta District included: Broad St. UMC, Norwich, North Norwich UMC, Plymouth UMC, Preston UMC, Oxford UMC, McDonough UMC, and Smithville Center UMC.
The kits will be delivered to Mission Central in Mechanicsburg, PA.
The group of approximately 30 adults also had time to swim, play basketball, walk in the gym, and hone their ping-pong skills. They ended the evening by making ice cream sundaes.
The Rev. Nancy Hale of Broad Street UMC, who participated in the event said, “It was great to see each congregation sharing their own gifts and talents to complete this mission project, but what's even better was how we started talking about other things we can do together, like sharing Bible studies or going on hikes or other fun events, so we can strengthen our bonds as United Methodist brothers and sisters in the Oneonta District.”
