Back to Church Sunday celebrates faith, friendship, and community
September 22, 2025 / By Gayle Denning, Akron First United Methodist Church
This past Sunday, Akron First United Methodist Church joined thousands of congregations across the country in celebrating National Back to Church Sunday, a movement designed to reconnect people with their faith communities and welcome new faces into the life of the church. At a time when our nation and community have faced heartbreaking tragedies and uncertainty, the invitation to gather, pray, and walk together has never been more important.
A Response to the COVID Drift
At Akron First, the inspiration to hold this event came from a shared awareness: COVID-19 disrupted routines, isolated individuals, and led many to drift from regular church attendance. Back to Church Sunday was a heartfelt invitation to come home, to reconnect, and to rediscover the strength found in spiritual community.
Connecting to the theme “Better Together”
The morning began with a spirit-filled worship service, where the message centered on the biblical call to unity, mutual support, and the joy of walking life together. The sermon called out the common focus and truth, of all Christians, is the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Following worship, the church buzzed with fellowship. Coffee and conversation flowed freely as longtime members reconnected, and newcomers were warmly welcomed. Together, Akron First saw a 25% increase in attendance, a powerful sign that people are longing for connection and truly believe “Better Together.”
Why it Matters to Akron First
At Akron First, we believe that a church family can be one of the most supportive aspects of a person’s life. In a world that often feels fragmented and heavy with sorrow, a church family offers more than belonging, it offers hope, prayer, a place to share burdens together, and purpose.
Our promise remains: Sharing the Heart of Christ from the Heart of Akron. On Back to Church Sunday, that promise was lived out in every handshake, every hug, and every shared moment of worship.
What’s Next?
Back to Church Sunday marked Akron First’s 218th church season. We have a long history and a beautiful legacy of community support. As we look toward the future, Akron First remains committed to walking alongside our community in both celebrations and struggles. Beginning Sunday, September 28, weekly Sunday School and Bible Study will offer opportunities for all ages to learn, grow, and deepen their faith. Whether through worship, study, or acts of service, we will continue to offer a place of love, healing, and encouragement. Akron First invites everyone to continue the journey, there is a place for you here.
Come as you are. All are welcome. We’re truly better together.
