On September 21, the Asbury First UMC community gathered for a moving consecration ceremony, marking the official dedication of the Columbarium and Memorial Garden. This meaningful addition to the campus has been several decades in the making, born out of a deep desire to provide a sacred space of remembrance, reflection, and hope for generations to come.
The Rev. Kathy Thiel presided over the ceremony, guiding the congregation through words of reflection, prayer, and blessing. With reverence and grace, she invited all present to consider the profound promise of God’s eternal care, reminding us that “…whether we live or whether we die, we belong to God.”
One of the most significant moments of the day came with the placement of the first ashes in the Columbarium. The ashes belonged to Karen Daniels, a lifelong member of Asbury First UMC who died this past year. In honoring her memory, Karen became the first to rest in this hallowed space, embodying the deep bond between faith, community, and eternal belonging. Her presence now marks the beginning of what will surely become a lasting legacy for the church family.
The Columbarium and Memorial Garden now stand as a visible testament to the hope and promise of eternal life. For those who have lived faithfully in Christ, it provides a final resting place of dignity, peace, and sacred beauty. For the living, it is a space of comfort and reflection—a tangible reminder of God’s everlasting presence and care.
This addition to the campus is more than a structure; it is a ministry. It ensures that Asbury First UMC can continue to walk with its members and families not only through life’s joys and sorrows, but even into life everlasting. For generations to come, the Columbarium will serve as a sacred witness to the truth that in both life and death, we remain in God’s loving embrace.
