The Upper New York Conference of The United Methodist Church

Discover, Develop, Deploy Christ-Following Leaders Initiative

How can we assure that Upper New York is making more disciples? What does it take for more people to say “Yes!” to following Jesus?

Over the last seven years, the Conference Leadership Team, the Bishop’s Operational Team, and the UNY Cabinet have developed measurable goals for this work to be reached by June 30, 2025:

    • 100 percent of churches to have Disciple-Making Pathways/Plans (DMPs)
    • To Increase the number of new disciples made each year to 3600 by June 30,2025
    • To discover 2,700 new potential Christ-following transformational lay and clergy leaders, to develop at least 1,800 of them in learning cohorts, and to deploy at least 900 of them as co-leaders in 450 or more churches.
    • And to have 50 percent of the churches in Upper New York to be considered highly vital by June 30, 2025.

The campaign to reach these goals is referred to as the Discover, Develop, Deploy Christ-Following Leaders initiative.

To measure how the UNY Conference is doing on fulfilling these goals, the Conference Communications Team has created a dashboard model.

Currently, the needle for churches that have a Disciple Making Plan/Pathway in place is set at 19% as of July 1, 2020. This number is based on churches who answered YES on the “Do you have a DMP?” form that was used at the 2019 Charge Conferences. If you have since put a DMP in place, click here to update the form and watch the needle in this category move up.

Because the Conference is just beginning this dashboard approach, the needles for the number of new disciples and Christ-Following Transformational leaders are both set at 0.

Anytime you have a church member who becomes a new disciple using the identifiers on the New Disciple Factsheet, be sure to click here and fill out the Celebrating New Disciples form and watch the needle in that category move up! This form takes less than 30 seconds to fill out for each new disciple. The Conference Operational and Leadership teams have a goal of having 800 new disciples by January 1, 2020.

Click here to check out the Identifying Christ-Following Transformational Leaders factsheet and if you know someone who would be a great leader (either lay or clergy), talk to them about it and if they are interested, click here to submit the Potential Christ-Following Leader form. The Conference Operational and Leadership teams have a goal of discovering 270 Christ-Following Transformational Leaders by January 1, 2020.

The percentage of highly vital congregations is currently at 11 percent.
