50 Day Life in the Spirit Event Devotional Guide

August 6, 2019 / By Anne Hutchins / .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Starting Date: August 2, 2019 and ending on September 20, 2019

August 2: Acts 19:2 [Paul] asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

In the Apostles’ creed you say that you believe in the Holy Spirit. But what do you know about the Holy Spirit?

Prayer: I want to know You. I want to hear Your voice. I want to know You more. I want to touch You, I want to see Your face, I want to know Your more [Words by Andy Park]. Holy Spirit, as part of our Life in the Spirit event, I want to learn more about you, but most of all I want to get to know you better. Amen.

August 3: Matthew 9:20-22 Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for 12 years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.” Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart, daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed from that moment.

Do you need to touch Jesus? Has something plagued you for a long time, that you long to be rid of? Do you need to be healed? Jesus will be coming to touch you at your church!

Prayer: Pass me not, O gentle Savior, hear my humble cry; while on others Thou art calling, do not pass me by! [Words by Fanny J. Crosby] Jesus, at our Life in the Spirit event, as you are passing through our midst, touching and healing, do not pass me by. I want to reach out and touch you.

August 4: Zechariah 4:6 Not by might, nor by power but by my Spirit says the Lord Almighty.

Are you tired and worn out trying to live your life on your own, trying to succeed, trying to fix your life? Let the Spirit of God work on you.

Prayer: Spirit of God, in our event with you, do in me what I am powerless to do, what I have failed at doing, what I am worn out trying to do. Do in me what I can’t do. Amen.

August 5: Psalm 51:10-12 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit to sustain me.

Do you need cleansing? Do you need to have a new spirit within you? Do you feel far from God?

Do you need the joy of your salvation restored?

Prayer: I need thee every hour, every hour I need Thee, O God. Come to me at our Life in the Spirit event, bringing me renewal, cleansing, joy and your presence. Amen

August 6: Luke 11:13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?

The Father gives the Spirit to those who ask. Have you asked your Heavenly Father for his Holy Spirit to fill you?

Prayer: Here I am, Lord. I am asking you to fill me with your Spirit and to fill many others at our Life in the Spirit event.

August 7: Isaiah 52:7 How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God Reigns.” Do you need good news, peace, good tidings, and salvation? Do you need the reign of God in your life?

Prayer: Lord, I pray for the people you are going to send us on our Life in the Spirit event to bring us good news, to proclaim your peace, to bring us good tidings of great joy, who will proclaim your salvation and who are experiencing your reign in their lives. Bless them. Fill them. Protect them. Bring them safely to us. Amen.

August 8: John 5:5-6 One who was there had been an invalid for 38 years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him “Do you   want to get well?”

Are there areas of your life where you have been paralyzed for a long time—emotionally, relationally, spiritually, or physically? Do you want to get well? Are you ready to do what you must do to be healed?

Prayer: Lord, I want to get well. At our Life in the Spirit event come and heal me and heal others at our church. Amen.

August 9: John 3:8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.

Where does the wind of God need to blow in your life? Is there dustiness that needs to be blown clean? Pull up the anchor that is holding you back. Raise your sails and allow the wind of God to take you where he wills.

Prayer: Wind of God, blow where you will in my life and in our church during our Life in the Spirit event. Take me and us where you want us to go. Amen.

August 10: John 4:24 God is spirit and his worshipers must worship in spirit and truth.

Has your worship become dry, empty, routine, predictable, dead? I'm coming back to the heart of worship, and it's all about You, all about You, Jesus. I'm sorry, Lord, for the thing I've made it, when it's all about You, all about You, Jesus. [Words by Matt Redman]

Prayer: Lord, enable us to worship you in spirit and truth at our Life in the Spirit event. Transform our church’s worship by the power of your Spirit. Amen.

August 11: John 6:63 The Spirit give life: the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. Are you really alive or just existing? Is your church alive or just going through church motions?

Prayer: Lord, at the Life in the Spirit event, bring us real life. Show us what LIFE in the Spirit is all about. Let us taste the abundant life you came to bring us. Amen.

August 12: John 7:38-39 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. Are there streams of living water flowing from within you or do you just sense a stagnant pool, or a dried-up lake bed? Have you received the Spirit since you believed?

Prayer: Fill my cup, Lord, I lift it up, Lord. Come and quench this thirsting of my soul. Bread of Heaven feed me till I want no more, Fill my cup, fill me up and make me whole. [Words by Richard Blanchard]. Amen.

August 13: Romans 8:15-16 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a Spirit of adoption. And by him we cry Abba, Father. The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Do you feel like an orphan? Do you long to sense the Father’s love for you? Do you long to know that you are safe and secure in the Father’s house?

Prayer: Lord, at our Life in the Spirit event help me to sense in a new way your great love for me. Help me to hear you say I love you my child! Amen.

August 14: John 15:26 When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me. Are there things you still need to learn about the Spirit of God? Are there still things you need to learn about yourself? Look to the Spirit for the truth.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, Truth divine, dawn upon this soul of mine; Word of God and inward light, wake my spirit, clear my sight. [Words by Samuel Longfellow]. Lord, at our Life in the Spirit event, teach me new things about yourself. Show me truth that will change my life. Shine the light of your word on my life that I might grow. Amen.

August 15: 1 Corinthians 6:11 And this is what some of you used to be. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. Are there areas of your life that need to be washed and made holy? Are there things you need to repent of?

Prayer: I want a principle within of watchful, godly fear, a sensibility of sin, a pain to feel it near. I want the first approach to feel of pride or wrong desire, to catch the wandering of my will, and quench the kindling fire. [Words by Charles Wesley]. Lord, at our Life in the Spirit event, wash me whiter than snow. Amen.

August 16: Romans 5:5 God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. Do you really feel God’s love for you? Does it flow out of you to others so they can feel it too?

Prayer: O let the Son of God enfold you with His Spirit and His love. Let Him fill your heart and satisfy your soul. O let Him have the things that hold you, and His Spirit like a dove will descend upon your life and make you whole. [Words by John Wimber]. At our Life in the Spirit event, Lord, touch me and our church anew with your love. Enfold me and our church in your loving arms. Amen.

August 17: 2 Timothy 1:7 For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline. Where do you feel powerless in your life? Where do you feel overwhelmed, a victim of your circumstances?

Prayer: Lord, at our Life in the Spirit event, touch me with your power that I might be victorious rather than a victim. Give me and us holy boldness. Amen.

August 18: Jude 20 Build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit.

Where do you need to be built up? What prayer burdens does God want you to take up?

Prayer: At our Life in the Spirit event, build me up where I am broken down. Teach me to pray in the Spirit. Amen.

August 19: Ephesians 4:3-4 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit. Do you need reconciliation with God? Do you need reconciliation with others? Does your church need reconciliation and unity?

Prayer: At our Life in the Spirit weekend break through the barriers of unforgiveness, bitterness, and grudges from the past. Bring us the unity, the reconciliation, the forgiveness that I need and that our church needs. Amen.

August 20: Romans 8:14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.

Are you lost? Are you wandering around through life? Do you need guidance? Are you facing difficult decisions without knowing which way to go?

Prayer: Savior, like a shepherd lead us, much we need Thy tender care; in Thy pleasant pastures feed us, or our use Thy folds prepare. Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus! Thou hast bought us, Thine we are. Blessed Jesus blessed Jesus! Thou hast bought us, Thine we are. [Words attributed to Dorothy A. Thrupp]. Spirit of God, at our Life in the Spirit event, give us the guidance that we need. Where you lead, we will follow. Amen.

August 21: Matthew 12:28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come to you. Where do you need Jesus to take authority in your life? In the life of your church? Where in your life and the life of your church does the kingdom of darkness need to be defeated that the kingdom of God might flourish?

Prayer: I surrender all. I surrender all. All to thee, my blessed savior, I surrender all. [Words by J.W. Van DeVenter]. Spirit of God, I submit to you. I surrender. I give you authority to run my life. Atour Life in the Spirit event take authority in my life and my church. Defeat the powers of darkness that are arrayed against us. Amen.

August 22: I Thessalonians 5:19 Do not put out the Spirit’s fire.

Where have you quenched the Holy Spirit in your life? In your church, where has cold water been thrown on what the Spirit was wanting to do?

Prayer: The kindling of the heaven-descended Dove, my heart an altar, and Thy love the flame. [Words by George Croly] Holy Spirit, I ask your forgiveness for those areas in my life and in the life of our church where we have tried to put out your fire rather than fan the flames. At the Life in the Spirit event, come and rekindle your work in my life and your work in our church. Amen.

August 23: Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in heavenly places. Do you know there is a war going on? A war for your soul and the soul of your church? There are more enemies pitted against you than you can see with your physical eyes.

Prayer: Lord, I pray for your protection as we come closer to our Life in the Spirit event. I pray for your protection over my life, over my church and over the people who are going to come and share with us. May all the plans of the evil one be thwarted! May you have a great victory in me and in us! Amen.

August 24: John 14:17 You know [the Holy Spirit], for he lives with you and will be in you.

Do you know the Holy Spirit personally or do you just know some things about the Holy Spirit? Is the Spirit resident in you? Is the Spirit president in you?

Prayer: At our Life in the Spirit event, Jesus, help us to open ourselves up to all that the Spirit wants to do in us and in our church. Holy Spirit, you are welcome in this place of my heart and my church. Amen.

August 25: Joel 2:28-29 I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. Peter tells us in Acts 2 that this promise of the pouring out of the Spirit on all kinds of people was fulfilled at Pentecost. Has it been fulfilled in your life? Has the Spirit been poured out on you?

Prayer: Lord, at the Life in the Spirit event, empty me of everything that is not of you, clear every obstacle in my life that would block me from receiving all you have for me. Amen.

August 26: Mark 1:8 I baptize you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.

Have you been baptized, immersed, flooded, drenched with the Holy Spirit? Jesus came that you might be thoroughly soaked in the Spirit.

Prayer: Lord, at our Life in the Spirit event, may I and others be baptized in the Holy Spirit. I give you permission for you to do what you want to do in my life and in my church. Amen.

August 27: Mark 3:14-15 He appointed twelve – designating them apostles – that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach and to have authority to drive out demons.

Have you moved out into ministry for Jesus? Have you taken the authority he has given you?

Prayer: Lord, here am I, send me. At our Life in the Spirit event, teach me more about the authority and gifts that you give me to minister for you. Amen.

August 28: Ezekiel 11:19-20 I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh. Then they will follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. They will be my people and I will be their God.

Do you have a divided heart or is it totally focused on God? Do you need a new spirit in you? Has your heart grown cold and hard?

Prayer: Lord, at the Life in the Spirit event, do heart surgery on me. Take out what doesn’t belong there and put in what needs to be there. I give you permission to do that. Amen.

August 29: Acts 4:31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. What needs shaking up in your life and in the life of your church? Take it to the Lord in prayer. Where do you need boldness? Ask to be filled with the Spirit anew.

Prayer: Lord, may our Life in the Spirit event be a time of shaking up, filling up and pouring out for me and my church. Amen.

August 30: Acts 5:12, 14 The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. . . more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. Do you long to see signs and wonders at your church that draw others to Jesus?

Prayer: Lord, move on our church, that we will be all that you want us to be. Help us to trust you for miracles. Draw people to our Life in the Spirit event and to our church after the event. Draw them to yourself that they might believe. Amen.

August 31: Acts 10:30-31, 33 Cornelius answered: “Four days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at 3 in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood before me and said, ‘Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor’ . . . Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us.”

God has been hearing your prayers for the Life in the Spirit event. Will you come to the event open to hearing all that God has commanded the team members to tell you?

Prayer: Open my ears, that I may hear voices of truth thou sendest clear; and while the wave-notes fall on my ear, everything false will disappear. Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see. Open my ears, illumine me, Spirit divine! [Words by Clara H. Scott]. Lord, help me and the others who will be at our church to come with open hearts and minds and ears that we might hear all that you would say through the team that is coming to our Life in the Spirit event.

September 1: Ephesians 4:30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Is there anything in your life or the life of your church that is grieving the Holy Spirit?

Prayer: Lord, at our Life in the Spirit event, help us to stop anything that is grievous to you. Show us your will and enable us to obey it. Amen.

September 2: Galatians 5:22-23 The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. The fruit of the Spirit are the character traits of Christ-likeness. The fruit of the Spirit reveals our family resemblance. Do you see this kind of fruit growing in your life or is some other fruit growing there?

Prayer: Lord, as a result of our Life in the Spirit event, may the fruit of your Holy Spirit become more and more obvious in my life and the life of my church. May I and my church grow more like Jesus. Amen.

September 3: 1 Peter 4:10 Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. Each person is gifted. God has given each believer at least one gift. Are you using your gift or gifts to serve others faithfully?

Prayer: At the Life in the Spirit event, Lord teach us more about Spiritual gifts and their proper use. Pour out more gifts upon our church that we might serve you more effectively, not for our glory, but for yours. Amen.

September 4: Mark 16:17-18 These signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues, . . . they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well. What signs follow you? Can people sense that Jesus passed by when you have been with them? Do people sense the kingdom of God advancing because of your ministry? Would there be enough evidence to convict you of being a Christian?

Prayer: Lord, as a result of our Life in the Spirit event, may there be signs all over the place that you have been here and that you continue to move in my life and in the life of my church. Amen.

September 5: Luke 4:1-2 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert, where for 40 days he was tempted by the devil. People filled with the Spirit draw the devil’s attention. He doesn’t have to worry about people that aren’t really doing anything for God. Is the devil concerned about you? Are you a threat to him?

Prayer: Lord, we trust that you will do a powerful work among us at our Life in the Spirit event.

Help us not to be surprised at the devil’s reaction to that. Help us to become a great threat to the kingdom of darkness as we move out for the kingdom of God. Amen.

September 6: Luke 4:18-19 The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

Do you need some good news? Do you need to be set free? Do you have difficulty seeing? Are you oppressed? Jesus is coming to your church. Meet him there.

Prayer: Lord, thank you that you are going to set captives free, release the oppressed, heal blind eyes and share your grace with us at our Life in the Spirit event. Touch me, Lord. And touch many others. Amen.

September 7: Luke 5:17 And the power of the Lord was present for him to heal the sick.

Is there brokenness in your life, spiritual, emotional, relational or physical brokenness? The power of the Lord will be present for Jesus to heal the sick and broken.

Prayer: Lord, come in your power to our Life in the Spirit event to heal the sick and broken. You can start with me. Amen.

September 8: Ephesians 4:11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers. . .Your pastor is a gifted person and a gift from God to your church. God loves your pastor very much and wants to bless your pastor.

Prayer: Lord, I pray that you would especially bless our pastor(s) during our Life in the Spirit event. Reward our planning team for being willing to take a risk in allowing a team of unknown people to come and minister to us. May our pastor(s) be touched anew with your love and your power. Amen.

September 9: Mark 5:30 Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me. ”Do you want to touch Jesus? Do you need his power to flow into you?

Prayer: He touched me, he touched me and O the joy that floods my soul! Something happened and now I know, He touched me and made me whole. [Words by William J. Gaither]. Lord, at the Life in the Spirit event, I want to touch you and I want to feel you touch me. I need your power to flow into my life. Amen.

September 10: Luke 11:9-10 Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. What are you asking, seeking, knocking for? The promise is that you SHALL receive.

Prayer: Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. Allelu, Alleluia! [Words by Karen Lafferty]. At our Life in the Spirit event, may all those who are asking, seeking and knocking receive the deepest desires of their hearts. And may that include me. Amen.

September 11: Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Would you like to be a part of a kingdom of righteousness, peace and joy?

Prayer: At our Life in the Spirit event, may your kingdom come. May your kingdom of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit come among us at our church. Cleanse us with your righteousness, give us your peace and fill us with joy. Amen.

September 12: Luke 18:27 Jesus replied, “What is impossible with me is possible with God.”

Do you have God-sized problems that need God-sized answers? With God the impossible is possible.

Prayer: Lord, we can do nothing without you. We need you. Make the impossible possible at our Life in the Spirit event. Amen.

September 13: Romans 8:26 The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.

As in the groans of childbirth, the Spirit longs to birth a new thing in us. And the Spirit himself prays for us to that end.

Prayer: Lord, whatever! Whatever you want for me and my church, that’s what I want! I don’t really know what to pray for but I want what you want. Amen.

September 14: John 14:16-17 I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever – the Spirit of truth.

Forever is a long, long time. An everlasting gift from the Father. The Counselor, the Helper, the Comforter, the Holy Spirit. Will you receive this gift?

Prayer: The Comforter has come! The Comforter has come! The Holy Ghost from heaven, the Father’s promise given! O spread the tidings ‘round, wherever man is found: The Comforter has come! [Words by Frank Bottome] Lord, may this Life in the Spirit event not be just a weekend ABOUT the Holy Spirit, but a glorious weekend WITH the Holy Spirit, your gift to us. Amen.

September 15: John 16:13 When he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.

Many people are turning to the occult today for a “spirit guide.” Why settle for a cheap imitation? We can have the real thing! The Spirit of truth, with a capital “S”!

Prayer: Lord, as the team members share during our Life in the Spirit event, may your Spirit guide our hearts and minds to hear what you would say to each one of us through each one of the team members. Keep us from distractions. Enable us to hear what you want to say to us. Amen.

September 16: Luke 24:49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high. Do you have a power shortage? A power outage? Have you been clothed with power from on high so very little of you is showing to others, just the power of God?

Prayer: Lord, send the old-time power, the Pentecostal power! Thy floodgates of blessing on us throw open wide! Lord, send the old-time power, the Pentecostal power, that sinners be converted, and thy name glorified! [Words by Charlotte G. Homer]. Holy Spirit, at our Life in the Spirit event, come and wrap us up in your power so little of us shows and lots of you shows. Amen.

September 17: Acts 1:4-5 While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. “This,” he said, “is what you have heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

Not many days from now! Three days to go! A blessing to be received is coming. Are you open to receive it?

Prayer: Lord as the time for the Life in the Spirit event to begin draws near, calm my fears, my anxieties, my worries about the weekend. Help me to set aside my presuppositions about what will happen at the weekend. Help me to trust you, to be open to you, and to receive all you have for me. May others join me in this. Amen.

September 18: Acts 13:2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Some of the team members may be starting a 24 hour fast in order to prepare them to hear the Lord more clearly about the weekend. Ask God if he is calling you to join them in that. What is the Holy Spirit wanting to say to you this weekend? What work is the Holy Spirit calling you to do?

Prayer: Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart. [Words by Dan Schulte] Holy Spirit, speak to me. Help me to hear you clearly. Help me to follow you completely. I will do what you want me to do. Amen.

September 19: Acts 1:8 You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

You WILL receive power. It’s a promise. And not power to witness, as it is often preached, but power that witnesses. The fact that you have been touched with the power of God will be a witness to the ends of the earth.

Prayer: Touch us with your power this Life in the Spirit event, O God. Touch us with your power. We need it desperately! Amen.

September 20: Acts 2:1-4 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Today’s the day for a visitation of God! The day has come. We will all be together in one place. The Holy Spirit will come!

Prayer: O the glory of your presence, we your temple, give you rev’rence. Come and rise from Your rest and be blessed by our praise as we glory in Your embrace, as Your presence now fills this place. [Words by Steve Fry]. Come Holy Spirit. Come and speak to us, touch us, fill us, revive us, heal us. Have your way with us! Amen.
