50 Years and counting…
Grace and Peace to you!   This year AUMS is celebrating 50 years of Ministry here in the City of Albany, NY. It is because of support and caring of folks like you, that we were able to begin, sustain, and continue Gods work in the city.
On Friday, April 3rd 2009, we celebrated our 50th year in ministry with a commemorative gathering and dinner. It was such a blessing to see old friends and supporters, as well as new friends in this ministry. Our theme for 2009 is “Celebrating our Past, Remembering our Mission, and Reconnecting for the Future”.
Under the direction of Peter Fish, AUMS continues to be a “Light On the Hill” in the community of West Hill. The programs of AUMS include: AUMSAmeriCorps, Emergency Food Distribution, a free Clothing Room, an AfterSchool Program, Summer Educational Enrichment Programs (SEEP), and a Seniors Program (Kindred Spirits United). We also have several new initiatives which include: A Computer Resource Lab, a Black Male Initiative program (for teens), and a “Young Mothers” program.
Although we are a small Ministry, we continue to do “big” things, with your support and caring. The community of West Hill continues to grow and our responsibilities to God’s People here in the city continues to grow. 2009 is our year to maintain supportive relationships with our congregations here in the Troy Conference, as well as reconnect with our friends who may feel they can’t make a difference. Together we can make a difference! With faith, and commitment, we can do the Lords work of caring and supporting those who have needs.
50 years of this ministry has shown us that together we can work to overcome poverty, hunger, substandard living conditions, underemployment, child abuse, violence, loneliness, and feelings of isolation, while providing a safe haven for children here in the city. AUMS programs work with the community, and with your continued support, we can fight these battles together.
We are looking forward to the next 50 years, and then the next 50…….
About AUMS

The Albany United Methodist Society (AUMS) Core Urban Ministry Team is working with AUMS Executive Director Peter Fish on projects to empower residents of the West Hill neighborhood in partnership with the City of Albany, N.Y., and the congregations of Troy Annual Conference.

Among the ministries and missions AUMS offers are:

Food Pantry: Troy Annual Conference volunteers and donations are the backbone of the society’s ability to serve 350 families—approximately 950 people—a month. Our Thanksgiving basket and Christmas toy distribution served records number of people in 2005 as AUMS increased its service to additional neighborhoods.

AUMS Summer Camp is a program for youth ages 6 through 13 in the West Hill area. The program begins July 5 and Director Annie Dyess leads a team of teen counselors in enrichment activities such as athletics, theater, life skills instruction, informative presentations and field trips.

AUMS After School Program, a community-based program, in the West Hill neighborhood focuses on literacy tutoring.

FOCUS Churches/Capital Area Council of Churches has allowed AUMS to expand its reach into the community. The consortium offers funding for community projects that identify and develop a currently unaddressed service in Albany that the partnership can sustain.
