Health and Welfare
Golden Cross Sunday
The Golden Cross Sunday Offering is collected to support special ministries of health and welfare. Funds are collected in local churches, usually in May, sent to the Conference Treasurer, and distributed the following year by the Troy Conference Golden Cross Committee of the Board of Global Ministries.
The money is distributed as follows:
- 40 percent to United Methodist Health and Housing, a retirement community
- 10 percent goes to Gateway-Longview, a children’s care facility in Williamsville, N.Y.
- 10 percent goes to Charlton School in Burnt Hills, N.Y., a residential treatment center for troubled youth
- 40 percent goes for local church grants for health and welfare related ministries including start-up projects, education, and other projects dedicated to impvoing the quality of life.
Local church projects funded in the past have included grants:
- To purchase equipment in food preservation in local church food pantires
- To start up stupport for a community ecumenical youth group
- To support an afterschool program for care, safety, protection and education of young people
- To support health programs offered by churches for health care education, healing and wholeness
- To support safety in Sunday school programs
