Conference Board of Global Ministries

In a world where famine and violence seem to rule, The United Methodist Church engages in ministries that help people put their lives back together—it even helps people pull together lives wracked by chaos from birth. Whether it is running a food co-op in Oklahoma or providing youth a safe environment in Zenica, Bosnia-Hertzegovina, evangelizing through education and witness on a university campus in Korea or working in a conflict-resolution agency in the United Methodist Church in Mozambique, our missionaries provide a witness to the life-changing power of the gospel.

But they do not work alone. Behind each missionary is a family and the family of Christ praying and paying for their work. All these people are individuals who have captured a vision of what the world can become when others gain freedom from the oppression of ignorance and poverty.

Goals of the General Board of Global Ministries

Goal 1

Make Disciples of Jesus Christ. We will witness by word and deed among those who haven’t heard or heeded the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We will initiate, facilitate, and support the creation and development of communities of faith that seek, welcome and gather persons into the body of Christ and challenge them to Christian discipleship. Where direct proclamation is not permitted a caring presence becomes the means of Christian witness.

Goal 2

Strengthen, Develop and Renew Christian Congregations and Communities. We will work mutually with mission partners in common growth and development of spiritual life, worship, witness and service.

Goal 3

Alleviate Human Suffering. We will help to initiate, strengthen and support ministries to the spiritual, physical, emotional and social needs of people.

Goal 4

Seek Justice, Freedom and Peace. We will participate with people oppressed by unjust economic, political and social systems in programs that seek to build just, free and peaceful societies.

The four goals of the General Board of Global Ministries express in summary form the mission responsibilities of the Board as set forth in the Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church and in the specific program mandates adopted by General Conference. Each of these goals is implemented through specific strategies approved by the Board of Directors and carried out in cooperation with annual conferences and other mission partners across the global connection.
