Purchasing a textbook at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School. Paying the tuition bill at Pennsylvania's Lycoming College. Covering room and board at Syracuse University.
Thanks to significant financial support from members of The United Methodist Church, these were all made easier for 33 students from the Upper New York Annual Conference through scholarships and loans from the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM).
The United Methodist Church celebrates six ministries with Sunday offerings every year. On Nov. 27, churches around the world will participate in a collection for United Methodist Student Day. This fund, along with World Communion Sunday and Native American Sunday collections, fund a portion of GBHEM's loans and scholarships. The remaining funds come from gifts, annuities and endowments GBHEM has invested and administered for decades.
For 2011, $5.3 million in loans and scholarships were awarded to over 2,600 students. Students from the conference shared $32,492 in scholarships and $57,100 in loans.
